OCD SUPPORT GROUP FOR PEOPLE OF COLOR
Starting October 17th, OCD Set Free is offering an 8-week support group for anyone who identifies as a person of color (POC), who is also struggling with OCD. Right now, people of color are facing 2 pandemic-like experiences simultaneously: COVID-19 and increased racial injustices. For people with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), this can feel like another hurdle to get through an already difficult time. This group provides a safe space for those wanting to share how OCD has impacted your professional life, racial identity, social, and family life, while in the midst of COVID-19.
OCD sufferers of color will have an opportunity to connect with others and share their experiences through our weekly Saturday sessions. Participants will:
- Have a safe space to explore whether the pandemic, systemic racism and the racial justice movement has increased OCD symptoms, including intrusive thoughts and compulsions.
- Discuss any barriers to previously navigating racism, microaggressions and discrimination experienced in various mental health settings.
- Examine the difficulties of not having peers and therapists of color in which to relate.
- Process issues that can arise from language, religion and cultural differences.
- Heal from the stigma associated with having OCD while being a person of color.
- Explore, from a strengths based perspective, how you are amazing and how to feel empowered during these times, in spite of having a diverse background and OCD!
